Hayes Takes His 12 Seasons to the KHL, and Pittsburgh Keeps Counting Its Exits
Kevin Hayes is heading to the KHL after 12 NHL seasons, the latest name to clear out of Pittsburgh's depth inventory as training camp draws near. It's a quiet departure — Hayes was never going to be part of whatever comes next here — but it lands in a summer that has already seen enough roster churn to make each individual move feel like part of a longer list.
That list is the point. Mantha left for New Jersey. Wotherspoon went to Vegas. Now Hayes goes overseas. The Penguins have been shedding veterans faster than they've been replacing them at equivalent experience levels, and the front office knows it. The Koivunen signing — eight years, $32 million for a 23-year-old with minimal NHL production — and the Ruck twins arriving out of the WHL are the organization's stated answer to that drain. Whether those bets pay off is a question for seasons down the road.
For right now, the math is simple enough: Pittsburgh is heading into camp with Crosby and Malkin still anchoring the middle, Novak locked up on a three-year extension, and a supporting cast that is younger and thinner than it was a year ago. That's the trade-off Dubas made this summer, and Hayes heading to the KHL is just the latest data point confirming the direction of travel.
