Hawks add Devin Carter from Sacramento as Gueye's foot surgery clouds bench depth
Atlanta acquired guard Devin Carter from the Kings on July 19, adding backcourt depth to a roster already reshaping itself after a first-round playoff exit. The move comes three days after the team announced that forward Mouhamed Gueye had surgery for a fractured left foot, with an updated status not expected for three to four months — meaning he is likely to miss at least the start of the 2026–27 season.
Gueye appeared in 85 games last season in a reserve role, and his absence leaves the bench rotation thinner heading into camp. The Hawks have been active this offseason adding guard depth — CJ McCollum was extended and Aaron Wiggins was acquired from Oklahoma City — and Carter continues that pattern of building out the backcourt behind Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jalen Johnson, and Dyson Daniels.
Atlanta's more pressing structural gap remains at center, where Tony Bradley is the only player with meaningful playing time logged at the position. The Carter addition does not address that hole, but it does give the front office another option in a backcourt that carried most of the offensive load last season.
