Hand Is Done for the Year, and Atlanta's Defensive Line Has No One Left to Lean On
Da'Shawn Hand is out for the season following quad surgery, which removes the one experienced interior presence Atlanta had along the defensive front. He was listed as out in the current injury report, and the depth chart confirms what that means in practice: LaCale London moves into the top spot at defensive tackle, with Anterio Thompson behind him. Neither has logged meaningful snaps this season.
The broader picture at defensive end is no better. Samson Ebukam is the only end who has played real minutes, and there is no established rotation behind him — Zach Harrison and Brandon Dorlus are both at zero production share. The Falcons traded for Gervon Dexter from Chicago before the season to shore up this group, but he has not yet shown up in the playing-time data either. Atlanta is starting the year with one functioning defensive lineman by the numbers.
This is the same front that was already undermanned before Hand went down. The offseason losses — Walker's ACL, Pearce's suspension, Za'Darius Smith's retirement and subsequent return to the roster — stripped the edge. Hand's injury strips what little interior depth remained. The team's linebacker situation is similarly thin, with Josh Woods as the primary starter and real questions about what's behind him.
The Falcons built this offseason around Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts. The bet was that the offense would carry the load. That bet looks considerably more expensive now that the defense has almost nothing left to work with up front.
