Guerin Adds MacKinnon and International Scouts to a Front Office That Needed the Help
Bill Guerin announced a round of hockey operations hirings Tuesday, bringing in veteran executive Dan MacKinnon and a group of international talent evaluators to shore up Minnesota's scouting infrastructure. It's a quiet move by offseason standards, but it fits the moment.
The Wild have spent most of this summer managing problems they didn't fully anticipate. The injury cluster that swallowed late June is still not fully resolved — Charlie Stramel remains out as of this week — and the roster carries real positional gaps heading into training camp. The goaltending depth behind Jesper Wallstedt is thin, and the center position has been a concern all offseason. Adding people who can find players — particularly internationally — is a reasonable response to a roster that needs more options, not fewer.
MacKinnon brings organizational experience that Minnesota's front office can use. The international evaluators are the more interesting hire in context: the Wild already signed a goaltender prospect on an entry-level deal this summer, and the pipeline behind Wallstedt is something Guerin has clearly identified as a priority. Better eyes overseas could accelerate that.
None of this fixes anything by October. But Guerin has been methodical this offseason — the Coleman and Maatta trade, the goaltending investment, now the front office build-out — and the direction is consistent. The roster still has gaps. The injury list has been stubborn. The infrastructure, at least, is getting stronger.
