Grzelcyk Signed, and the Sabres Stop Pretending the Youth Movement Can Cover Everything
Buffalo signed veteran defenseman Matt Grzelcyk on Thursday, and the move says the quiet part out loud. With Mattias Samuelsson week-to-week and Olen Zellweger still in concussion protocol, the organization needed a body it could trust on the back end — and it went and got one.
Coach Ruff offered some optimism alongside the news, saying Samuelsson's timeline could be shorter than the week-to-week tag implies and that Zellweger might clear protocol before the season gets going in earnest. That's worth noting. But the Sabres already traded Bowen Byram to Chicago in the summer and brought in Zellweger specifically to fill that gap — and now Zellweger is unavailable. Grzelcyk is the answer to the answer being hurt.
The blue line entering this season was always going to lean on Rasmus Dahlin and hope the pieces around him held. They haven't, not yet. Grzelcyk is a veteran who knows his role; this isn't a long-term fix, it's a bridge. The next week or two will tell whether Samuelsson and Zellweger can get back before the losses start stacking up.
