Gray's Concussion Puts Tennessee's Defense in a Difficult Spot Before Sunday
Cedric Gray was in concussion protocol as of Sunday, the result of a UTV accident over the holiday weekend. His status for the season opener against the Jets remains up in the air. Gray led the Titans with 164 tackles last season — by a wide margin the most productive defensive player on a unit that spent most of 2025 getting carved up.
The timing compounds what was already a rough week for Tennessee's defense. I noted a few days ago that the secondary was shorthanded after Nazeeh Johnson drew a six-game suspension for a PED violation, a plan that unraveled before the season even started. Now the linebacker room is short its most reliable piece, too. Jermaine Johnson and Owen Pappoe are next in the depth chart behind Gray, and the Titans will need one of them to absorb a significantly larger role if Gray can't clear protocol by Sunday.
The Jets aren't a gimme opponent for a defense already navigating these absences. Tennessee's secondary was a documented problem heading into this week — the team's top safety was well below the production level you'd expect from a starter at that position, and there's little proven depth behind him. Add a linebacker question on top of that and the defense faces a genuinely uncomfortable opener. Whether Gray clears in time or not, the Titans will find out quickly whether their defensive construction can hold up when things go sideways.
