Girard and Kindel Are Back. The Blue Line Problem Isn't.
The Penguins activated both Ben Kindel and Simon Girard off injured reserve Thursday, which is good news — particularly for Kindel, whose return to the ice after a medical emergency on the team plane less than two weeks ago is the more significant headline here. Getting him back healthy matters more than whatever it means for the depth chart.
That said, the depth chart still has a problem. Karlsson remains the only defenseman on this roster producing at anything close to a meaningful level. Behind him, Chase Pietila and Jake Livanavage have logged next to nothing in the way of production — Pietila was recalled from the AHL just days ago and is still finding his footing at this level. Girard's return helps the headcount, but the structural gap on the blue line doesn't close just because the IR list does.
Pittsburgh has been shuffling bodies back there all month — recalls, placements, a waiver claim here and there. The activations Thursday tidy up the roster, but the underlying issue I flagged last week hasn't changed: there's Karlsson, and then there's a significant drop to whoever is next. That's a short-term concern worth watching as the schedule continues.
