Giants Send Furman to Washington, Get a Pitching Prospect Back
San Francisco traded infielder Nate Furman to the Nationals on Sunday for minor league pitcher Tony Neubeck. It's a modest swap, the kind that doesn't move any needles on its own, but it matters as a signal: the front office has moved past the 40-man housekeeping phase and into actual roster reconstruction.
A week ago I noted the Giants had cut five players from the 40-man, calling it the first formal move of what figures to be a busy offseason. The Furman deal is the next step. Rather than simply shedding names, San Francisco is now converting surplus pieces into something — in this case, a pitching arm in the system. Given how badly the rotation depth was exposed this season, adding any live arm to the pipeline is at least directionally correct.
Neubeck is a minor league pitcher, so expectations should stay appropriately low for now. The Giants finished 65-97, their rotation was stretched thin all year, and the 60-day IL still holds a long list of names. One trade for one prospect doesn't fix any of that. But it does suggest the front office is working the phones, and after a season this difficult, movement in any direction is worth noting.
