Garcia back, but the window is nearly shut
Maikel Garcia returned to the 10-Day IL on September 5, and his absence has been felt. The Royals are 3–7 over their last 10 games, scoring just 3.0 runs per game after averaging 5.2 in the prior stretch — a drop that coincides almost exactly with Garcia going back down. He was part of the August 17 activation wave that helped fuel the nine-game winning streak, and when he left again, the lineup quietly lost one of its more reliable table-setters at third base.
The math is still technically alive — elimination number is 8, 16 games left, 7 games back of the last wild-card spot — but it does not leave much room. A Garcia return that sticks would give Kansas City a functional lineup again: Bobby Witt Jr. anchoring, Jac Caglianone as the power option, the catcher tandem of Salvador Perez, Luca Tresh, and Elias Díaz providing genuine production behind the plate. That is a real offense on paper. The problem is the rotation is giving back runs faster than the lineup can manufacture them.
The next 10 days are probably the last honest test. If Garcia is healthy and the offense climbs back toward four-plus runs a night, the Royals can steal enough games to stay relevant through the final week. If the scoring stays flat and the pitching staff — already leaning hard on Daniel Lynch IV and Mason Black in a rotation emergency — keeps leaking, the elimination number takes care of itself quietly.
