Four Quarterbacks, No Starter Named
Atlanta finalized its 53-man roster Saturday carrying four quarterbacks, which is less a show of depth than a confession that the team still doesn't know who's starting Week 1. Tua Tagovailoa is healthy after his back scare cleared in early August. Michael Penix Jr. has been working back toward full practice but remains unresolved heading into the final week. The Falcons kept both, kept Cooper Rush behind them, and kept a fourth — the roster move that tells you everything about how much uncertainty they're managing at the position that matters most.
The drop from either starter to Rush is steep enough that this isn't really a four-quarterback situation in any functional sense. It's a two-quarterback situation with a safety net that doesn't inspire much confidence. Penix showed real promise in his nine-game stretch last season — nine touchdowns, three interceptions, nearly 2,000 yards — and the organization has been reluctant all camp to hand the job to Tagovailoa by default. Carrying four quarterbacks into the week is how you buy time when neither answer feels clean.
The decision has to come before Sunday. My read: if Penix isn't cleared for full practice reps by midweek, Tagovailoa starts and the Falcons hope the back holds. That's not a plan so much as a default. For a team that spent heavily this offseason to build around a run-first system — Robinson locked in, Pitts extended, Bergeron anchored — the one position they needed settled is the one still in the air.
