Ford Field on Sunday, and the Vikings Still Don't Know Who's Carrying the Ball
Aaron Jones Sr. is questionable for the trip to Detroit, which means the Vikings are heading into a division road game without a firm answer at their most-tested position. Jones has 463 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns this season and has been the engine of a run game that's helped Minnesota control games at a consistent clip. A knee injury from Sunday's win over Indianapolis is what's keeping the answer uncertain.
Jordan Mason is back, activated off injured reserve Saturday after recovering from the fractured thumb that required surgery last month. He played in three games before going down and showed enough to matter. But "activated" and "ready to carry 15 touches at Ford Field" are different things, and it's reasonable to expect him eased in rather than thrown at the deep end immediately.
That leaves Demond Claiborne as the name behind both of them. He's been available all season and has seen limited work — 65 rushing yards across six games. If Jones can't go and Mason is on a pitch count, Claiborne gets a real audition in a real game. Detroit is a division opponent on their home field; this is not the week you want to find out what your third back is made of.
The Vikings are 6-0 and have managed every obstacle this season without flinching. The backfield situation is the one thing still unsettled heading into the week, and Sunday will clarify it one way or another.
