Foote, a Reclamation Signing, and Three Guys Still Not Skating
The Flyers added two forwards this week — Nolan Foote on August 19, a former first-round pick with a heavy shot looking to restart his NHL career, and an unnamed prospect the following day who didn't receive a qualifying offer from his previous organization. Neither signing changes the depth chart in any meaningful way right now. Both are camp bodies, organizational pieces, the kind of move you make when three players on your actual roster are still listed out.
That's the part that hasn't moved. Cates, Tippett, and Murchison remain out with no return dates attached, and camp is close enough that the front office is now filling roster spots with reclamation projects rather than waiting on its own guys. Cates was a plus-13 last season and one of the more reliable forwards on the team. Tippett put up 30 points. Murchison is depth, but depth you need when the top of the forward group is already thin.
The Foote signing at least brings something to evaluate — a legitimate shot, a first-round pedigree, a reason to watch him in camp. The August 21 addition is more of a contingency, a player who still has time on his side but wasn't wanted elsewhere. Both fit the same description: insurance against a forward group that keeps losing availability.
The Michkov contract clock is still running in the background. The injury situation is the more immediate problem heading into the next ten days.
