Flyers Still Waiting on Three Forwards as Camp Opens
Four days after I flagged this situation, nothing has changed. Noah Cates, Owen Tippett, and Ty Murchison remain out, and training camp is no longer roughly a week away — it's here. Murchison is the only one currently listed with an active injury designation, which makes the status of Cates and Tippett the more pressing unknown heading into the first days on the ice.
The timing matters because those two players aren't fringe depth. Tippett finished last season with 30 points in 50 games, and Cates was a plus-13 who logged over 16 minutes a night. Neither had a dominant offensive season, but both were part of the forward group that averaged 3.6 goals per game down the stretch — the run that convinced the front office to hand out extensions to Zegras, Vladar, and Drysdale. Losing them for any stretch of camp disrupts the continuity the organization is trying to build on.
Right wing is the spot to watch most closely. Tippett plays there, Matvei Michkov plays there, and Michkov still hasn't started contract talks with the club as of this week. Travis Konecny is the one reliable option at the position. That's a thin margin for a team that just made a significant financial commitment to its core.
Camp will answer some of this quickly. But the Flyers are walking in with more open questions than the summer's spending suggested they'd have.
