Flyers Re-Sign Grebenkin, Check One Box Before Camp
Philadelphia re-signed left winger Nikita Grebenkin to a two-year deal on Thursday, giving the organization a body at a position that needed one. The depth chart at left wing had been running thin behind Alex Bump, and Grebenkin — who came over from Toronto — at least gives the Flyers a second option heading into training camp.
It's a modest move, and worth keeping in proportion. Noah Cates, the team's most productive left winger last season at 27 points and a plus-13, remains unavailable. Grebenkin isn't a replacement for that; he's insurance against a depth chart that had nowhere to go if something went wrong.
The front office noted one restricted free agent still to sign as of Thursday, so the roster isn't quite buttoned up. And the bigger items from my piece two days ago — goaltending depth, the Michkov contract situation, Ty Murchison still listed as out — remain exactly where they were. Grebenkin fills a slot. The structural gaps are still open.
