Florida Handed Carolina a 6–3 Opening Night Reality Check
The Hurricanes dropped their first game of the new season Saturday, losing 3–6 to Florida, and the final score did about as much damage as the roster sheet. Seth Jarvis, who led this team with 22 goals in 40 games during the title run, is still months away. Eric Robinson remains day-to-day. The two biggest offensive absences from the championship group were both watching from the wrong side of the glass as Carolina's depth got its first real test — and came up short.
This was always the concern heading into camp. The front office spent the summer patching the blue line — Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Mike Reilly, the Staal extension — but the forward group is thinner than it looks on paper, and it looks thin on paper. Svechnikov, Ehlers, and Blake are capable secondary scorers, but capable secondary scoring and a missing top-line center is a gap that shows up fast against a Panthers team that has been here before.
Sebastian Aho will carry this team until Jarvis gets back, same as he has all year. One game tells you nothing about a season. But one game can tell you something about a problem, and this one confirmed what the last few weeks of roster moves had been quietly announcing: the defending champions are short, and they know it.
Jarvis's timeline — somewhere in the late October to early November range if things go well — is the number Carolina is actually counting down to. Everything until then is about staying close enough that it matters when he returns.
