Fletcher's Role Is Worth Watching as Camp Gets Underway
The Kraken brought in Chuck Fletcher as senior advisor to Jason Botterill two days before training camp opened, and the timing alone is worth noting. Fletcher spent years running front offices in Minnesota and Philadelphia — organizations with very different philosophies — and adding that kind of experience to a front office doesn't happen without a reason.
What that reason is, exactly, remains unclear. Seattle's stated posture this offseason has been incremental: acquire Mackie Samoskevich, extend Bobby McMann, hold the core together. That's a Botterill-led plan, and nothing about the Fletcher hire formally changes it. But a former GM in an advisory role tends to have opinions about roster construction, and this is a team that finished 34-48 for the third consecutive season at roughly the same record.
My read is that the more interesting question isn't what Fletcher's title says — it's whether his presence shifts how aggressively the organization moves if a trade opportunity surfaces before the season starts. Pittsburgh's reported interest in one of Seattle's young centers hasn't gone anywhere. Tolvanen is already gone. The roster has more moving parts than the "incremental improvement" framing suggests, and now there's a second experienced voice in the room when those calls come in.
