Five Unavailable. Four Weeks to Edmonton.
Training camp opens with the Canucks carrying a notable injury list into what is already a complicated rebuild year. Jonathan Lekkerimaki is out, and the beat narrative heading into camp still has Thatcher Demko, Derek Forbort, Filip Chytil, and Evander Kane all unavailable. That's a lot of bodies to account for before a single practice rep is taken.
Demko is the one that matters most. Goaltending was a genuine problem throughout last season, and the Canucks' response — signing Chris Driedger to a professional tryout last week — is a contingency measure, not a solution. Driedger is a camp evaluation, a name to fill a crease while the organization waits to learn more about Demko's timeline. The September 29 opener in Edmonton is five weeks out. That's not a lot of runway if the answers on Demko don't come soon.
The forward absences compound things differently. Kane and Chytil were part of a depth group that already struggled to produce last season — the team went 15–17 in one-goal games, which sounds respectable until you remember the overall record was 25–57. The margin for error in close games was always thin, and it got thinner when secondary contributors went cold or went missing. Lekkerimaki, Chytil, and Kane being unavailable at camp means younger players and recent additions like Brendan Gallagher will need to carry more of the early evaluation load.
Alex Edler is in the building now in a development role, and the prospect pipeline has been quietly reinforced. Those are real things. But the injury list is the most immediate variable, and right now it doesn't have many answers attached to it.
