Falcons Open Camp Without Either Quarterback, Sign Cooper Rush
Atlanta's training camp started Tuesday with a notable absence at the most important position on the field. Both Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. were held out as the Falcons began practice, with head coach Kevin Stefanski confirming the news to reporters. Tagovailoa is dealing with what the team is calling a "flare up" of an undisclosed injury. Penix, who showed genuine promise in a nine-game stretch last season — 1,982 passing yards, nine touchdowns, three interceptions — remains questionable. The organization moved quickly, signing veteran Cooper Rush to cover the room.
Rush is a known quantity in the backup tier: a capable game-manager who has stepped in before when starters went down, without ever really threatening to hold a job outright. That's not a knock — it's exactly what the Falcons needed on short notice. The concern isn't Rush himself; it's what his presence signals about how unsettled this quarterback situation actually is heading into camp.
The roster already carried a noted lack of viable depth behind Tagovailoa entering the offseason, and now both of the quarterbacks ahead of Trevor Siemian on the depth chart are unavailable on day one. For a team that finished 2025 winning several more close games than their underlying numbers suggested they should have, there isn't much margin to absorb a prolonged absence at the position. The skill around the quarterback — Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts Sr., Drake London when healthy — is legitimate. The question is who's throwing to them, and right now that answer is genuinely unclear.
