Ekholm Down After Hard Fall Against Carolina

Mattias Ekholm left Thursday's game against the Hurricanes after a hard fall and the Oilers are waiting on his status. No timeline has been given yet.

The timing is worth noting. Jason Dickinson has been out since mid-October, and the depth chart behind Evan Bouchard already runs thin — Ryan Shea and Spencer Stastney are the next names up on the blue line. Walman was moved out earlier this month as well. That's a lot of moving parts on a defense that was already working with a short bench.

Ekholm is one of Edmonton's most reliable shutdown defenders, the kind of veteran presence that doesn't show up in the highlight reel but matters in the third period of a close game. If he misses time, Shea and Stastney will be asked to carry more than they've carried so far this season. Worth watching how the coaching staff deploys them over the next week or so.
