Eight arms down, five games to go, and Tampa Bay has already clinched
The Rays enter the final week of the regular season at 95-62, AL East champions, playoff seed locked. They also enter it with eight pitchers on the injured list — McClanahan, Pepiot, Jax, Wells, Cleavinger, Heasley, Uceta, and Rodriguez — which is a lot to absorb even when the division title is already framed on the wall.
Rasmussen and Martinez are still standing, which matters more than anything else in this rotation right now. Rasmussen has been the team's best starter all year, and Martinez has eaten innings reliably behind him. The concern isn't the last five games of the regular season. It's what this staff looks like when October starts and the margin for error shrinks to nothing.
The offense has held up its end. The lineup has been good enough to keep Tampa Bay winning through all of this, and the last 30 games — 20-10 — reflect a team that hasn't collapsed under the weight of the training room. But carrying a shorthanded pitching staff into a playoff series is a different ask than doing it in September when the seed is already secured. That's the note worth keeping.
