**Early Is Back, and the Rotation Needs Him**

Connelly Early is coming off the 60-day IL, which makes him the first meaningful reinforcement Washington's starting rotation has seen in a while. The Nationals are carrying five starters on the 60-day IL right now — Herz, Gray, Waldichuk, Parker, and Waldron among them — so the depth chart behind Cade Cavalli and Andrew Alvarez has been thin for months.

The timing is late. Washington is 67-77 with 18 games left and sitting 10.5 games back of the last wild card. There is nothing to chase. But Early getting innings down the stretch matters for a different reason: this is a young rotation that needs to figure out who belongs in it next year, and actual game action tells you more than anything else.

Cavalli has been the one consistent piece all season, and Alvarez has quietly put together a solid year in a swingman role. Beyond those two, the rotation questions are real. Early's return gives the staff a chance to answer at least one of them before the calendar runs out.
