E.J. Jenkins is the Eagles' tight end for Week 3

Dallas Goedert is out. Saquon Barkley, listed active but working through a stinger, is a game-time question at best. The two players who did the most damage near the goal line last season — Goedert with 12 touchdown catches, Barkley as a reliable check-down and short-yardage option — are either unavailable or compromised heading into Week 3. What's left at tight end is E.J. Jenkins, the lone name on the depth chart at the position.

I noted when Goedert went down that Zach Ertz was the answer Philadelphia was working with. That answer has since changed. Jenkins is a practice-squad-level player being asked to fill a role that was, not long ago, one of the more productive tight end spots in the NFC. The red-zone math doesn't work the same way without Goedert running seams and Barkley threatening the flat.

Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith will carry the offensive load, as they have been. But the Eagles built their scoring around bodies in the end zone — Goedert underneath, Barkley as a safety valve — and both of those bodies are either on the shelf or limited. For Week 3, Philadelphia is asking Jenkins to be something, in a spot where the team needs a lot.
