Douglas Is Out for Kansas City. The Receiver Room's Early Promise Hits a Wall.
Caleb Douglas is listed Out for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, which is a notable absence given how quickly he'd become the most encouraging thing about Miami's receiver room. Two weeks ago he had a five-catch, 94-yard afternoon against the Raiders and picked up a Rookie of the Week nomination. Now he's watching from the sideline while the Dolphins face one of the better secondaries in the conference.
The timing is awkward for a position group that was already built on thin margins. Miami traded Tutu Atwell to the Rams in August, shedding receiver depth to add backfield insurance, and the offseason bet was that Douglas and Chris Bell — both named starters heading into Week 1 — could hold the room together. Bell is active. Ryan Miller is listed Questionable. Will Sheppard is the third name on the depth chart. That's what's available against Kansas City.
Malik Washington can absorb some of the slack — he's been a reliable piece of this offense in multiple roles — and De'Von Achane as a pass-catcher takes pressure off the outside. But the Chiefs will know Douglas isn't out there, and they'll play accordingly. This is the kind of week where the offseason gamble on receiver depth gets stress-tested in the worst possible matchup.
