Doughty gets the C, inherits a thinner room than anyone planned for
The Kings named Drew Doughty the 15th captain in franchise history on Wednesday, a decision that would have read as straightforward organizational continuity six months ago. It reads differently now. Kopitar is retired. Fiala is recovering from follow-up surgery and will miss the start of camp. The room Doughty is walking into as captain is not the room anyone drew up.
Doughty has been a King his entire career, a two-time Cup winner who has logged big minutes through the franchise's best years and its harder ones. The captaincy fits. What's new is the weight attached to it — he's not inheriting a leadership role alongside a 20-year franchise center. He's filling a void that can't really be filled, just managed.
The offensive math hasn't changed since I wrote about it earlier this week. Adrian Kempe led the team last season with 36 points. Fiala's 34 are unavailable to start the year. Kopitar's 21 are gone for good. Quinton Byfield and Alex Laferriere are the names the organization is counting on to grow into that space, and they'll need to do it while also taking cues from a captain who plays the back end. That's a lot of threads to pull at once.
Camp opens with Doughty wearing a letter and a shorter bench than expected. The Doughty announcement is the right call. The circumstances around it are just harder than the announcement itself suggests.
