Donald Is Still Waiting. So Are the Rams.

Sean McVay said last Friday that he has no update on Aaron Donald's return from retirement, and doesn't expect one until after the team gets back from camp. That's where things stand. As I noted earlier this week, "trending upwards" is the entirety of the public information — a direction, not a decision.

The practical problem is that camp is happening now. Braden Fiske leads the interior defensive line as it's currently constructed, and the depth behind him is thin enough that Donald's absence is felt even before a single preseason snap. A player of Donald's caliber — one of the most decorated interior defenders in NFL history — doesn't get replaced by a roster move. You either have him or you don't.

McVay is clearly leaving the door open, and the "trending upwards" framing suggests the conversations haven't gone cold. But the Rams can't build their defensive game plan around a maybe. At some point soon, probably when camp wraps, they'll need to know.
