Dickerson is out, and the Eagles are running short on margin for error
Landon Dickerson is listed Out, which means Philadelphia is now managing a significant hole at one of the more consequential spots on the offensive line heading into the season. The depth chart shows Drew Kendall at center and Tyler Steen leading the interior reserve group, with Cam Jurgens and Kiran Amegadjie behind him — names that got some preseason run and showed enough in the All-22 review of that second exhibition game to suggest the infrastructure isn't bare. But infrastructure holding up in August and infrastructure holding up when Saquon Barkley needs a crease in a close November game are different things.
The broader context here is that this offense is already operating with a different identity than it had a year ago. A.J. Brown is gone. The passing game now runs through DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert, which means the run game — and the line protecting it — carries more weight than it did when defenses had to account for two genuine alpha receivers. Barkley ran for over 1,200 yards behind this group last season, and that production doesn't happen without the line doing its job. Dickerson being unavailable puts pressure on every rep the backups take.
The Eagles have been stacking injury news for weeks now. Greenard is already out for the opener on the defensive side. Dickerson's absence adds a second significant name to the unavailable column before the season begins. Philadelphia won 11 games last year by executing in close moments better than their overall efficiency suggested they should — that kind of team can absorb a hit or two, but it requires the pieces around the stars to hold. Right now, a few of those pieces are missing.
