Detroit Is Selling
Jeff Passan reported it Thursday, and the organization's own moves confirmed it before anyone needed to say it out loud. Tarik Skubal is going to be traded before the August 3 deadline. The same day that news landed, the Tigers called up Max Clark and shipped Jake Rogers to Baltimore for a minor league arm. Three moves, one direction.
Skubal's departure is the one that stings. He's 8-5 with a 2.99 ERA and has been the only reliable top-of-rotation arm Detroit has had all season — Verlander retired, Flaherty on the IL with right flexor inflammation, the 60-day list swollen to a dozen names. Framber Valdez and Keider Montero will carry what's left of the rotation into August. That's a thin ask.
The Clark call-up is the honest part of all this. As I noted yesterday, he was the third overall pick in 2023, and bringing him up now is the organization saying plainly that the next few months belong to evaluation, not contention. The Tigers are 49-57, four games from the last wild card with 56 to play — alive on paper, seller in practice.
The Rogers trade to Baltimore for Zane Barnhart is small but fits the pattern: clear the roster, collect the futures, see what the young players are. Detroit didn't announce a rebuild today. It just stopped pretending otherwise.
