Delpit Is Questionable. Behind Him, There's Almost Nobody.
Grant Delpit is listed as questionable this week, which matters more for Cleveland than it would for most teams. The depth chart behind him at safety is essentially Daniel Thomas, who has handled a fraction of the snaps Delpit has seen, and then Tedric Thompson with no meaningful playing time to speak of. The Browns paid $48 million this offseason to lock Delpit in as the anchor of a rebuilt secondary. When he's not on the field, that investment doesn't transfer to whoever lines up in his place.
The secondary situation was already fragile before this. Noah Igbinoghene is out at cornerback, leaving the CB room short-handed as well. Cleveland has only two corners with real playing time on record this season, and the position was flagged as thin even when everyone was healthy. Losing Delpit — even for a game — compounds a problem that was already there.
The offseason logic was sound: lock up Ward, lock up Delpit, give the secondary a foundation it hasn't had. What the front office couldn't fully account for was the injury attrition that has chipped away at every other position around them. The defensive line is thin, the linebacker depth drops off sharply behind Quincy Williams, and now the one unit Cleveland thought it had secured is showing cracks. My read is that if Delpit can't go, this is a week where the back end of this defense is genuinely exposed.
