Dell Is Back. Now Houston Has an Actual Receiver Room.
Tank Dell is set to return in Week 7, per the team's reported plans, and the timing is notable. When I wrote about his return window opening earlier this week, the question was whether the roster around him would look anything like what he left. It does not — and that is mostly good news.
The receiver corps Dell is rejoining bears little resemblance to the emergency patchwork Houston was running in September. Marvin Harrison Jr. is active and integrating. Jaylin Noel has been a genuine contributor, with 334 yards and two touchdowns across six games. Kayshon Boutte and Xavier Hutchinson have absorbed volume. The group that was held together with wire and emergency acquisitions after Jayden Higgins' ACL tear and Nico Collins' hamstring issues now has something approaching actual depth.
What Dell adds is a different question from what he adds immediately. He has been out since late August, and returning from IR into a functioning offense mid-season takes time to calibrate. The depth chart currently lists him first among receivers, which reflects his standing on the roster more than his expected snap count in Week 7.
The bigger picture is that C.J. Stroud, coming off AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors, now has more options than he has had at any point this season. Houston is 2-4 with 11 games left and cannot afford to lose ground. Getting Dell back healthy — and keeping him there — matters more than where he lines up on Sunday.
