Davis lands on IR. Waynes is starting. That's the depth chart.

Jalen Davis is on Injured Reserve, which means the question I raised a couple days ago — how thin is this cornerback room, really — just got answered the hard way. Trae Waynes is your starter. DJ Ivey and Josh Newton are behind him. None of the three logged meaningful playing time last season, which was already the concern before Davis went down.

This is the part of the defensive rebuild that the offseason didn't fully address. Cincinnati spent real capital on the interior line — Dexter Lawrence, the work on the defensive line room — and Bryan Cook came in to shore up the secondary. But the cornerback depth was always the quieter problem. Last season the defense gave up enough to cost this team several winnable games, and the secondary was a significant part of that. Now the group tasked with fixing it is thinner than it was in August.

Waynes has been around long enough to know the job. Whether he can hold up as the primary corner for a stretch of games is the near-term question. My read is that Cincinnati needs to be watching the waiver wire and the street, because what's behind Waynes right now is unproven. The offense can carry a lot of weight, but it can't cover receivers.
