Dart's Knee Puts Winston Under Center, and the Margin for Error Just Shrank
Jaxson Dart is out, and Jameis Winston is the quarterback. The depth chart listed Dart first and Haener second coming into the week, so Winston's activation into a starting role represents a real reshuffling — not a planned handoff. Winston is listed as Active on the current injury report, which is the good news. The rest of the picture is more complicated.
The receiver room he's inheriting is thin in ways I've been noting since training camp. Odell Beckham is the only wideout who has logged meaningful snaps this season, and at 33 he is not a high-volume solution. Behind him, Malachi Fields and Charlie Jones are on the depth chart without established production to point to. Deonte Banks remains Questionable at corner, meaning the secondary that has been operating short-handed for weeks is still short-handed. Winston will need to move the ball efficiently against a defense that may well be doing the same thing to his side of the field.
The running game is the cushion here. Tyrone Tracy and Cam Skattebo are both healthy and capable of carrying a significant load, and this offense was always designed to lean on the ground. My read is that the Giants' best path with Winston at quarterback is a short, controlled passing game built around the tight ends — Theo Johnson had a productive 2025 — and whatever Nabers can give them if he's active. The margin for error at quarterback was already narrow with a rookie starter. It got narrower today.
