Darnold Returns, but the Safety Position Is a Problem This Week
Sam Darnold is back, which is the good news. Julian Love is out, which is the complicating news. And with Nick Emmanwori listed active but carrying the injury history he does — the ankle surgery, the long camp absence — Seattle is heading into Sunday with its safety depth genuinely tested in a way it hasn't been before this season.
Love appeared in ten games last season and contributed a pair of interceptions before his current absence. Emmanwori is technically available, but anyone who watched training camp knows how carefully this staff has managed his workload since the ankle procedure. Whether he's ready for a full defensive assignment is a different question than whether he's on the roster.
The depth chart behind them runs through the DB group — Josh Jobe, D'Anthony Bell, AJ Finley — names that have been on the roster all year but haven't been asked to carry a starting safety load. That's the real exposure Sunday. Darnold's return steadies the offense, and that matters. But the defense is being asked to hold things together with a back end that looks thinner than it did a month ago.
