Darnold Is Out. Lock Has the Job. The Receivers Are Still There.
Sam Darnold is listed out with a glute injury, and Drew Lock is the starter. That's the situation heading into this week, same as it was last week — except now there's an actual result attached to it. Lock won Sunday. Seattle's title defense is still standing.
The part worth noting is what didn't change when Darnold went down. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is active and healthy. AJ Barner is available. The skill-position group that helped Darnold throw for 4,720 yards and 30 touchdowns last season is largely intact. Zach Charbonnet remains out, which keeps the backfield thin, but Kenneth Walker III and Emanuel Wilson are both available to carry the load. The pieces around the quarterback are fine. The question has always been the quarterback.
Lock handled Week 2. That's two data points now — the win last week, and the injury status this week confirming he's active and preparing as the starter. Whether that's a trend or just a short sample is still genuinely unclear, and I wrote as much after Sunday. What's clear is that Seattle isn't scrambling at the skill positions. If Lock struggles, it won't be because he ran out of weapons.
