Dallas Signs Juanyeh Thomas to Patch a Safety Room That Has No Bottom
The Cowboys signed safety Juanyeh Thomas, filling a spot that has been empty in any meaningful sense since Malik Hooker went down and Jalen Thompson followed him out the door. I wrote last week that Dallas was entering games without a healthy starting safety. This is the answer to that, such as it is.
Thomas is a body with NFL experience at a position where the Cowboys currently have none. That's not a knock — that's just the math. The depth chart behind Thompson and Hooker was Darian Thompson, who logged no meaningful snaps last season. The secondary was already the team's thinnest unit before the injuries; now it's operating on fumes, and a new signing at least gives the coaching staff someone to work with.
The broader problem hasn't changed. This is a roster that entered 2026 with documented thin depth at safety, and the in-season injuries have simply made visible what was already there. Adding Thomas stabilizes the headcount. Whether he can stabilize anything on the field is a different question, and one that probably gets answered sooner than anyone would like.
