Curry Talks This Weekend Put a Number on What Golden State Is Building
The Warriors and Stephen Curry are scheduled to sit down this weekend to discuss a contract extension, and the conversation will settle something the entire offseason has been circling: whether Golden State is committing to this retooled roster as a championship vehicle or leaving itself room to pivot. GM Mike Dunleavy has been clear publicly that Curry stays. Now comes the paperwork.
The backdrop matters. Golden State finished 39-46 last season, missed the playoffs, and then spent the summer rebuilding the roster around Curry and Draymond Green rather than away from them. Kristaps Porzingis came in on a two-year deal to anchor the center spot. Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton were added for shooting and perimeter defense. The front office let Quinten Post walk. Every move pointed the same direction — this is Curry's team, built for one more run while he can still carry it. An extension this weekend would simply make that official.
What makes the timing notable is where Curry stands off the court. He was named the first active NBA player to receive a Hall of Fame exhibit this summer — an acknowledgment of what he already is, not what he might become. He averaged 25.9 points on 46.5 percent shooting last season in only 49 games. The production hasn't slipped; the availability has been the question. An extension negotiation will have to account for that, and both sides know it.
If a deal gets done, it closes the loop on an offseason that has otherwise moved quickly and with purpose. If it doesn't — or if talks extend past the weekend without resolution — that's a different story, and one worth watching as training camp gets closer.
