Culpepper Down, Nine on the IL, Thirteen Games Left
Kaelen Culpepper is on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring injury, and Minnesota is now carrying nine players on the IL entering the final 13 games of the season. That's the whole sentence. There's no softening it.
Culpepper had been one of the quiet bright spots of a difficult year — hitting .351 in 21 games at shortstop, giving the Twins a legitimate bat at a position that needed one. Losing him now, with the roster already stripped of Buxton, Larnach, Lopez, and a half-dozen pitchers, means the depth chart at short runs to Ryan Kreidler and Tristan Gray. That's not nothing, but it's also not what you want when you're five games back of the last wild-card spot with an elimination number of 11.
The Twins have won three straight and gone 5-5 over their last ten, which is about as much as you could ask given the circumstances. Taj Bradley is 12-6 with a 3.70 ERA and has been the one constant in a rotation that's been reshuffled all season. Ryan Jeffers is hitting. Austin Martin is hitting. The lineup can still score. But the margin for error at 70-79 is essentially gone, and every new name added to the IL list makes the arithmetic harder to ignore.
Thirteen games. Nine injured. The Twins need to go something like 9-4 just to have a conversation about October. That's not impossible. It's just very, very thin.
