Correa's Season Is Done. So Is the Infield.
Carlos Correa will not play again this year. The 60-day IL designation has been there all along, but the framing has shifted — what was a recovery timeline is now a season-ending reality, with 18 games left and no path back. Houston is 1 game out of the last wild-card spot, and its most experienced infielder is watching from the outside.
The depth chart at third base runs through Isaac Paredes, Braden Shewmake, and Raynel Delgado. That is not a playoff infield. Shewmake has hit well in limited time this season, and Peña has been Houston's most efficient offensive piece at short, but the group as a whole is held together with tape. Altuve at 36 and Walker at 35 are the veterans anchoring the corners, and neither is playing at a level that covers for what Correa's absence removes.
What makes this harder is the context around it. Yordan Alvarez is day-to-day. The rotation is running on fumes. The organization has been without a general manager since late August. Joe Espada is managing a team that keeps losing pieces with no mechanism to replace them. The bullpen — Josh Hader in particular — has been exceptional, but a closer can only do so much when the lineup ahead of him is this thin.
Eighteen games. One game back. The math is still possible. The roster, right now, is not built for it.
