Corner Depth Is Gone. The Rams Are Next.
The angle I flagged two days ago has gotten worse. Deonte Banks is still Questionable, and the depth chart at cornerback — which was already operating on fumes after the preseason roster churn — is now thin enough that the Giants are leaning on names that weren't on the 53-man roster a week ago. Nic Jones and Jaden Robinson are the top two corners by available playing time. That is not a comfortable sentence to write heading into a road game.
The opponent matters here. The grounding on Aaron Donald's health status isn't in front of me, so I won't assert specifics about his return — but the Rams' passing attack has consistently been one of the league's more sophisticated operations, and a cornerback room cycling through practice-squad options is not the group you want tested by it. The Giants went 1–8 on the road last season, and the secondary's instability was a through-line all offseason: two corners released in August, another who retired four days after signing. None of that got resolved cleanly.
Greg Newsome II is listed as Active, which is something. But the injury report still has Banks at Questionable, and the depth behind him is short. My read is that this is the week the secondary situation stops being a roster-construction story and starts showing up in the box score. Week 2, away from home, against a team that knows how to attack coverage — the Giants don't have much margin for error in the back end.
