Cooks Gets Promoted, and the Receiver Room Is Still Short
The 49ers moved Brandin Cooks from the practice squad to the active roster, a transaction I noted when it happened — he landed on the practice squad first, and now he's been elevated. It fills a name on the depth chart. It doesn't fill the hole.
The receiving corps has lost three players in roughly two weeks, and Cooks, a veteran who has bounced through several organizations over a long career, is the answer San Francisco has at the moment. Mike Evans remains questionable. Brandon Aiyuk is out. The names behind them on the depth chart — Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins, Will Pauling — are players who haven't logged meaningful production this season. Cooks gives Purdy a target with experience running routes at this level, which matters. Whether he can carry a full week's workload at this stage of his career is a separate question.
What one signing can't fix is structural. The 49ers entered this stretch thin, and the attrition has made thin look generous. George Kittle is active and healthy, which helps, and Christian McCaffrey remains the most versatile weapon on the offense. But Purdy needs more than two reliable options, and right now the third and fourth options are unsettled at best.
Cooks to the active roster is a reasonable move. It's also a sign of where things stand.
