Cole Hit 1,000 Games. The Roster Around Him Is Still Very Young.
Ian Cole reached the 1,000-game mark on Friday, which is a legitimate milestone for any NHL defenseman. It takes durability, adaptability, and a long run of teams willing to keep you in the lineup. Worth noting.
What it also does, in a quiet way, is put a spotlight on where Chicago actually stands depth-wise. The Blackhawks carry real gaps at left wing and center behind their top options. Beyond Tyler Bertuzzi at LW, the next two names on the depth chart have produced next to nothing in meaningful ice time this season. At center, the drop from Connor Bedard to Frank Nazar is significant — and Nazar himself is operating well below what you'd want from a reliable second-line pivot.
Cole's experience is genuinely useful in a room this young. That part of the coverage around his milestone is fair. But experience in the locker room doesn't fill a second-line center slot, and it doesn't solve the left-wing thinness that shows up plainly when you look at who's actually playing behind Bertuzzi. Those are roster construction problems, not culture problems.
My read: Cole's 1,000th game is a nice moment for him personally, and the Blackhawks are right to acknowledge it. It just doesn't move the needle on the things that actually need moving.
