Cleveland Closes the Regular Season With a Playoff Berth in Hand
The Guardians beat the White Sox 9–3 on Sunday to clinch the fifth AL wild-card seed, finishing the regular season at 83–79. It is a result that would have looked implausible six weeks ago, when Cleveland sat at 61–68 and was staring at a quiet October.
The late-season turnaround was built on pitching. Parker Messick (14–10, 2.71 ERA) and Gavin Williams (16–9, 3.81 ERA) anchored a rotation that tightened significantly down the stretch, and closer Cade Smith — 41 saves, 1.90 ERA — was nearly untouchable in high-leverage situations. Offensively, Chase DeLauter (.294/.386/.488) set the ceiling while Angel Martínez provided consistent secondary production with 11 home runs and 36 RBI in 67 games.
Cleveland went 19–11 over its final 30 games to get here. The postseason is a different exercise entirely.
