Chicago Arrives Monday. Vegas Has Made Its Choice in Goal.
The Golden Knights open at home against Chicago on September 29 with Carter Hart and Adin Hill as their goaltenders, and that is the answer to a question that has been hanging over this organization since June. Schmid was traded to Florida. Hutchinson retired. The offseason came and went. Camp opened, ran its course, and closed down to 28 players — and Vegas never added a third option with meaningful NHL experience. Hart and Hill is what they have, and at this point it is clearly what they chose.
That is not a criticism on its face. Hart and Hill split the work last season, and the depth chart reflects a genuine tandem rather than a starter and a placeholder. But there is no margin. If either goaltender misses time, Vegas is reaching into Henderson or scrambling on the waiver wire mid-season — the same position every contending team tries to avoid. The front office has bet that the tandem holds.
The rest of the roster has real upside. Eichel, Marner, and Stone give the Knights a top group that can carry games. The late-season numbers — eight wins in the final ten — showed what this group looks like when it clicks. The problem last year was the close games, a 16–27 record in one-goal contests that kept them out of the playoffs. Fixing that requires goaltending that doesn't crack under pressure. Hart and Hill will get the first test Monday.
