Champagnie's Season Is Over; Dybantsa's Is Just Starting
Wednesday brought both kinds of news for Washington. Justin Champagnie underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot, ending his season five games in. At the same time, AJ Dybantsa was upgraded to available for the game in Cleveland — the No. 1 overall pick finally cleared to make his NBA debut after missing the first four games with an ankle sprain.
The Champagnie injury is a straightforward loss. He's a wing, he was available, and available wings are not something this roster has in abundance right now. A foot fracture requiring surgery is the kind of thing that takes months, not weeks.
The Dybantsa news is the one Washington has been waiting on since before the season started. He tweaked his ankle in the preseason finale and missed the opener, then kept missing games while the team went on without him. The debut in Cleveland is a small thing becoming real — nothing more than that yet, but it's a start.
