Carolina Locks Up Kochetkov Through 2028-29
The Hurricanes signed Pyotr Kochetkov to a two-year, $7.9 million extension on Thursday, keeping him in Raleigh through the 2028-29 season. It is a straightforward piece of organizational housekeeping that also happens to arrive at an unusually useful moment.
The timing matters because the goaltending picture has been unsettled all camp. Brandon Bussi is carrying the starter's load right now, and the depth chart behind him has been thin enough that the front office sent Zach Jovanovski back to the OHL earlier this month just to clarify the situation. Kochetkov's extension does not change who is starting tomorrow, but it does answer a longer question about whether Carolina intends to keep a capable second option in the building for the next few seasons.
Worth noting: the depth chart currently lists Cayden Primeau, Bussi, and Kochetkov in that order by playing time. That ordering will sort itself out as the season develops. What the extension signals is that the organization views Kochetkov as part of the solution rather than a placeholder, which is a reasonable position given what he has shown in his time with the club.
The roster has enough genuine problems right now — the Jarvis absence, the thin left wing, the blue line rebuilt on the fly after Nikishin's departure — that stable goaltending depth barely registers as a headline. But quiet stability is still stability. Carolina just paid to keep it.
