Carlton Davis Is Out, Dre'Mont Jones Is Questionable, and the Secondary Depth Chart Is Running Low
Carlton Davis III is out. Dre'Mont Jones is questionable. The cornerback depth chart already lists DJ Daniel, Charles Woods, and Channing Canada at the top three spots — none of them household names — and that was before this week's game against Pittsburgh added two more names to the injury report. The secondary was already thin coming in. It is thinner now.
What makes this worth watching is the timing. The Patriots came into 2026 with Christian Gonzalez's contract situation still unresolved and the coverage group carrying real questions about depth behind him. Jones was signed to a three-year deal in the offseason specifically to add a credible pass-rush presence that takes pressure off the back end. With him at questionable, that calculus changes. Brenden Schooler is on the NFI list. Charles Woods was already flagged in camp coverage as an injury concern. The names available to fill gaps are getting shorter.
My read: the next week or two will tell you something real about how this staff manages a secondary under stress. Kevin Byard is active and healthy, which helps. Marcus Jones is available. But if Davis misses extended time and Jones can't go, New England is asking some very young and unproven corners to hold up against passing games that will absolutely test them. The A.J. Brown situation already put the offense in a difficult spot. Now the defense has its own version of the same problem.
