Carlo Is Still Out. The Blues Still Don't Have an Answer.
I've written this note twice already, and the situation remains exactly where it was: Brandon Carlo is out, no timeline, training camp weeks away. At some point the repetition becomes the story.
The Blues traded two third-round picks to Toronto specifically to shore up a back end that fell apart late last season. In the final 10 games, St. Louis allowed 3.1 goals per game — up sharply from 2.4 over the prior 20. The offense was fine; the defense gave it back. Carlo was supposed to be the stabilizing piece. Right now he's not a piece at all.
What makes this uncomfortable is that the rest of the offseason has moved forward. McMichael is signed long-term. McTavish is in the fold. The forward core has shape. The defense does not, and the two blueliners who logged the most ice last season — Cam Fowler and Philip Broberg — combined for a minus-14 in plus-minus. Justin Faulk was the one bright spot among the regulars. That group needed help. Carlo was the help.
My read is that this becomes genuinely urgent in the next two weeks. If Carlo can't practice at the start of camp, the Blues open the season with essentially the same defensive structure that cost them in April — just without Kyrou's offense to paper over it.
