Capitals add Poirier from New Jersey, a quiet move with some context behind it
Washington acquired goalie Remi Poirier from the Devils for a pick on Sunday. On its face it's a minor transaction — a depth goaltender changing addresses — but it's worth noting given where this roster sits right now.
The Capitals already carry three goalies in Logan Thompson, Charlie Lindgren, and Cal Petersen. Adding Poirier suggests someone may be moving, or that Washington wants an extra body nearby while the rest of the roster sorts itself out. The blue line has been patched together since Desharnais went down for four to six weeks, and the depth behind the top forwards at left wing and center remains thin. When a team is managing that many soft spots at once, having an extra goalie in the system is less strange than it looks.
No terms were disclosed on the deal beyond the pick going to New Jersey. Poirier doesn't crack the top three on the depth chart as it stands, so this is organizational insurance more than a statement move. Worth logging, nothing more.
