Camp's barely started and Kansas City's receiver room is already being stress-tested
This is the third note I've filed on the Chiefs' receiving corps in as many days, which tells you something. Cyrus Allen — the rookie who was turning heads early in camp — is Questionable after a shin bruise on a special teams drill. Xavier Worthy, who was one of Mahomes' more reliable options last season with 42 catches for 532 yards, is also Questionable. Both of them banged up before the first preseason snap. That's a lot of uncertainty concentrated in one position group at one time.
The timing is awkward because Mahomes is ramping up carefully. He got full clearance for camp participation after tearing his ACL and LCL in Week 15 last year, but his status is still being monitored, which means these early practices are supposed to be about rhythm-building — getting him comfortable again with the people around him. That's harder to do when two of those people aren't fully available. Kelce is there, Tyquan Thornton is active, Rashee Rice is back. The room isn't bare. But it's thinner than Kansas City would have drawn it up.
The deeper issue is that this offense needs a clean offseason more than most. Last year's 6-11 finish wasn't about talent — it was about execution, and execution gets built in August. Every day Worthy or Allen spends on the side is a day Mahomes doesn't get the repetitions that matter. Worth watching how the next week shakes out before drawing conclusions, but the Chiefs don't have a lot of margin for a slow start to camp.
