Camp opens with the injury list still longer than the rotation
Gueye, Gilbert, and Dennis remain day-to-day, and the picture hasn't changed enough to write a different sentence about it. I noted two weeks ago that seven rotation contributors were sidelined as Atlanta tried to absorb a significant defensive overhaul. The number the grounding can confirm right now is three active day-to-day designations — Gueye, Gilbert, Dennis — which is still three too many for a team that needs live reps to figure out how Lu Dort, Ryan Nembhard, and Jalen Wilson actually fit alongside Jalen Johnson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
The offseason logic was sound. Atlanta went 9–10 in close games last season, fell apart against the Knicks, and went out and got a genuine perimeter stopper in Dort. The problem is that a defensive identity doesn't install itself in a film room. It needs practice time, switching assignments, communication — the stuff that only happens when bodies are on the floor together. Every day Gueye or Gilbert or Dennis isn't available is a day the new pieces are integrating with an incomplete picture of what this roster actually is.
Nothing here suggests panic. Day-to-day designations in late August are not the same as season-ending injuries, and the Hawks' core — Johnson, Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu — is intact. But the margin for a slow start is thin. The whole point of this offseason was to stop losing games Atlanta shouldn't lose. That requires cohesion, and cohesion requires everyone in the gym.
