Camp Opens Short-Handed on the Blue Line
Training camp is here, and Pittsburgh's defensive depth problem is already visible. Melvin Fernström is out, and Caleb Jones's recovery timeline remains unclear — two absences that put the blue line in a thinner spot than the front office would have liked when the first skate goes down.
The Korczak acquisition from Vegas was supposed to cushion exactly this kind of situation. Freeing up cap space while adding a body was the logic of that deal, and it still holds — but a body only helps if the bodies around him are healthy. With Jones's status still unresolved heading into camp, Korczak moves from depth piece to something closer to a necessity, and the margin for further attrition is essentially gone.
Karlsson and Letang remain the top pair, and that's a real pair — combined they logged nearly 46 minutes of ice time per game last season and produced at a high level. But the drop-off behind them was always the concern, and it's sharper now with the injury situation. My read is that the first two weeks of camp will tell Pittsburgh more about its defensive floor than any summer transaction did.
The roster moves announced Tuesday got the group finalized on paper. What happens on the ice is a different question, and it starts now.
